Creating a Resilient and Sustainable Safety Culture
Atanu Das hosts Hack Your Hazcom from the AHMP HAZMAT Summit at the Hilton Riverside in New Orleans with guest Vince Paige, an AHMP board advisor, discussing how to build an engaged safety culture through empowered, self-sustaining safety teams. Vince explains that safety mindset is harder than PPE compliance, and shares his approach: create multiple site-specific safety teams, identify people who want to drive change, give them autonomy and discretionary resources, and step back so they solve problems themselves. He emphasizes that the leadership team must represent and trust safety, ideally with the safety leader reporting to the plant manager, to enable real empowerment. Vince advises young EHS professionals to challenge non-safety leaders when needed, manage imposter syndrome, seek mentorship through professional organizations like AHMP, and build networks beyond their company.
